Why scammers flock to Wall Street

Willie Sutton, a prolific bank robber in the 20th century, was famously, if erroneously, credited with a famous quote. Asked by a reporter why he robbed banks, Sutton supposedly answered “because that’s where the money is.” The message stuck, generating a principle called Sutton’s Law which in essence states: when diagnosing a problem, first consider the obvious.
Some people are attracted to the financial industry because of their love of math, appreciation for economics or fascination with commerce. Many more enter the financial field because Wall Street is where the money is. If driven by greed, there is no quicker route to cash than the industry where money is the product. When firms and individuals offer no legitimate expertise or value added, greed drives them to resort to client-harming practices.
